Soon, Faster Access to Sagada from 12 to 3 Hours

As summer approaches, travelers seeking a cooler destination in the Philippines need look no further than Sagada. Known for its stunning mountain views and serene atmosphere, Sagada is about to become more accessible than ever, thanks to major transportation upgrades. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) are behind these improvements. Soon, a trip that once took 11 to 12 hours by bus will be reduced to just three hours, thanks to a new airport in Candon City and improvements to the road connecting Ilocos Sur to Sagada.

A Game-Changing Airport in Candon

Scheduled for completion by 2026, the new Candon Airport in Ilocos Sur is set to drastically cut travel time from Manila to Sagada. This 500-hectare airport, located in Calaoaan Barangay, will feature a runway 1.5 kilometers long, with the potential for future expansion if needed. Mayor Eric Singson of Candon City shared that the airport will become the second longest runway in the Ilocos region, just behind Laoag International Airport.

With a funding of P270 million, the airport will not only improve access to Sagada but also bolster the region’s healthcare and trade sectors. Located near the Ilocos Sur Medical Center, the airport will serve as a crucial hub for medical emergencies and evacuations. Additionally, the airport’s proximity to a growing economic zone is expected to increase trade opportunities, especially benefiting the region’s large overseas Filipino worker (OFW) population.

Road Improvements to Sagada

In addition to the airport, road improvements are well underway to make the journey to Sagada even smoother. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is working on the Cervantes-Besao-Sagada Road, which is expected to be completed by 2026. The P738-million project is already halfway done, with major sections of the road in Ilocos Sur set to be finished soon. This road upgrade will reduce travel time to Sagada by connecting Ilocos Sur to Mountain Province, making it easier for travelers to reach Sagada through the municipality of Besao.

Once completed, the road will shorten the travel time between Ilocos Sur and Sagada to just two hours. It will feature paved concrete, drainage systems, and slope protection, improving the overall safety and comfort of the journey.

Long-Term Impact on the Region

These two major developments—the Candon Airport and the improved road network—promise to transform not only travel to Sagada but also the economic landscape of the region. The enhanced accessibility will make Sagada an even more attractive destination for tourists, while also boosting trade and healthcare in Ilocos Sur and Mountain Province.

By 2026, travelers can expect to enjoy a seamless trip to Sagada, experiencing the cooler mountain air, breathtaking landscapes, and unique cultural offerings—all within hours of leaving Manila. This exciting transformation will surely enhance the summer experience for locals and tourists alike.
