Public transportation in Baguio City has reached a new milestone.
IJODA Transport Cooperative has officially introduced 49 modern jeepneys to the city.
The unveiling took place on October 5, 2024, at Baguio City National Science High School.
This development supports the government’s Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP).
The fleet includes 48 Class 2 jeepneys and one Class 3 unit.
These vehicles will operate on several routes, including:
- Baguio Plaza – Fernandino Subdivision (Irisan)
- Baguio Plaza – Up Village (Gate) – Marville (Irisan)
- Baguio Plaza – Irisan
- Baguio Plaza – Balenben
- Baguio City – Lamtang
These routes are designed to improve travel for both residents and visitors.
A Landmark Event
The launch event brought together key figures from various sectors.
Notable attendees included:
- Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong
- Irisan Barangay Captain Carlos Arthur Carlos
- Cooperative Development Authority (CDA)-CAR OIC Regional Director Dr. Felicidad Cenon (represented by Cooperative Development Specialist Lotes Lab-oyan)
- Engr. Thea Camiring-Mabiasan from the City Engineering Office – Traffic and Transportation Management Division (CEO-TTMD)
The Department of Transportation-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOTr-CAR) was also represented.
Chief Administrative Officer Jennilyn Avelino and PTMP Focal Person Engr. Elmer Mendoza Jr. led their team at the event.
Driving Change for a Better Future
IJODA General Manager Anert Bangsael set the tone for the gathering.
“These vehicles are more than just upgrades,” he said.
“They show our dedication to safer, greener, and more efficient transportation for the community.”
Mayor Magalong expressed his excitement for the progress.
He tied the launch to Baguio City’s Smart Mobility Project, which aims to address traffic congestion.
“These jeepneys are a valuable addition to our transport system,” he shared.
“People will find them comfortable, affordable, and reliable.
This is the kind of improvement that inspires residents to use public transport instead of private cars.”
Strengthening the Community
The event also highlighted the cooperative’s commitment to the community.
Chief Administrative Officer Avelino, a resident of Irisan, shared her enthusiasm.
“As someone from Irisan, I’m thrilled about what these jeepneys mean for our daily commutes,” she said.
Barangay Captain Carlos expressed similar sentiments.
He noted that these modern vehicles will benefit Irisan, the largest barangay in the city.
Drivers and operators were reminded of their responsibilities.
Avelino encouraged them to follow traffic rules and prioritize the well-being of passengers.
She emphasized these points during the drivers’ safety pledge.
Meanwhile, Engr. Mendoza motivated cooperative leaders to seek new growth opportunities.
He also stressed the importance of transparent financial practices to maintain harmony.
CDA-CAR’s Lotes Lab-oyan reminded everyone of the cooperative’s guiding principles:
Compliance, Organization, Operations, and Plans and Programs (C.O.O.P.).
These values, she said, are the foundation of a thriving organization.
Transforming Transportation in the Region
This launch is part of a broader transformation in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Over 300 Modernized Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJs) and Utility Vehicle Express (UVEs) are now operational in the area.
These vehicles are equipped with advanced safety features and eco-friendly technology.
They are tailored to meet the challenges of CAR’s mountainous roads.
The PTMP aims to replace outdated, polluting vehicles with modern alternatives.
This shift is a step toward creating a cleaner and more sustainable transport system.
A New Chapter for Baguio City
The unveiling of these modern jeepneys represents a collaborative effort.
It reflects the dedication of local leaders, cooperatives, and the people they serve.
Mayor Magalong summed it up perfectly.
“These jeepneys are a game-changer for Baguio City,” he said.
“They offer a comfortable, practical, and eco-friendly option for commuters.”
With these new additions, IJODA Transport Cooperative is paving the way for a brighter future. The road ahead is promising for both the city and its residents.
