The government is exploring the removal of the EDSA bus lane, a major component of Metro Manila’s traffic system, according to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes. However, he emphasized that the proposal hinges on improving the carrying capacity of the MRT to accommodate displaced commuters.
The matter was discussed during a recent meeting with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., where officials tackled the Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan (CTMP) for Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
Condition for Removal: MRT Capacity Must Improve
Artes clarified that the removal of the bus lane is still just a proposal and will not be implemented unless the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) system is upgraded.
“DOTr is currently expanding the MRT’s carrying capacity by 30%,” Artes explained. “Right now, each train has only three coaches, but an additional coach will be added per trip. The infrastructure is being adjusted to accommodate longer trains.”
The increased capacity aims to absorb passengers who would be affected should the bus lane be removed, preventing congestion on EDSA.
EDSA Rehabilitation Set to Begin in March
Aside from potential changes to the bus lane, Artes confirmed that the rehabilitation of EDSA is set to begin by March 2025.
“DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan has already outlined the timeline and a preliminary traffic management plan for EDSA’s rehab,” Artes stated.
The government is expected to release more details in the coming weeks, including alternative transport solutions and rerouting plans to minimize commuter disruptions.
What’s Next for EDSA Commuters?
While discussions are ongoing, no final decision has been made regarding the removal of the bus lane. The MMDA and DOTr are focusing on improving public transport first to ensure a smooth transition should the proposal move forward.
Commuters are encouraged to stay updated on upcoming changes, as Metro Manila’s traffic landscape may soon see significant adjustments.
Video: DILG: Phase out of EDSA bus lane looms; bikes, motorcyles to share lanes
The government plans to gradually phase out EDSA buslanes once the MRT’s rider capacity increases to 800,000 daily.
They will also modify bike lanes to accommodate motorcycles, improving road efficiency.
Secretary Jonvic Remulla highlighted that these changes aim to enhance public transportation and reduce private car use.
Transport reform advocates emphasize the need for multiple commuter options, including buses and trains.
The long-term goal is to create a more sustainable and efficient urban transport system for the majority of Filipinos.
