MMDA Bans Mall-Wide Sales to Ease Holiday Traffic Congestion

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced a ban on mall-wide sales during the Christmas season.

This decision aims to reduce the heavy traffic expected during the holiday rush.

Gabriel Go, chief of the MMDA Special Operations Group Strike Force, highlighted that the move is intended to create a smoother flow of vehicles during the season.

Traffic Measures for the Holiday Rush

Starting November 18 until December 25, all road excavation activities in Metro Manila will be put on hold.

This includes road reblocking, pipe-laying, and road upgrades that could disrupt traffic.

However, some projects, such as bridge repairs by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), flood control works, and emergency leak repairs, will continue.

These efforts are expected to help commuters and motorists navigate Metro Manila’s busy streets more easily.

Mall Operating Hours Adjusted

Shopping malls in Metro Manila, including 29 located along EDSA, have agreed to adjust their opening hours.

From November 18 to December 25, malls will open at 11 a.m., an hour later than usual.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes encouraged mall operators to consider extending evening hours to give the public more time for errands and shopping.

“This adjustment will help balance traffic volume and accommodate shoppers during the holidays,” said Artes.

Sales and Delivery Restrictions

While mall-wide sales are not allowed, individual stores may still hold sales on weekdays.

These promotions must be discreet, with no advertisements, banners, or announcements.

To further reduce congestion, the MMDA has limited mall deliveries to nighttime hours, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Exceptions are made for perishable items like food and ice.

Making the Holidays More Manageable

The MMDA has implemented these measures to help commuters and shoppers navigate the holiday rush with fewer delays.

“Our goal is to create a better experience for the public during one of the busiest times of the year,” Artes added.

These adjustments reflect the MMDA’s proactive approach to managing Metro Manila’s roads during the holiday season.

Planning Ahead

The MMDA is optimistic that these measures will help reduce traffic bottlenecks and make holiday preparations more convenient for residents.

The agency encourages the public to plan ahead, adjust schedules, and follow the regulations to make the season more enjoyable for everyone.

By working together and adhering to these guidelines, Metro Manila can experience a safer and more organized holiday season.

Through collaboration with stakeholders and thoughtful planning, the MMDA is committed to making this year’s holiday rush more manageable for all.
