The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is intensifying efforts to ensure road safety during the holiday season by deploying breathalyzers nationwide and increasing personnel presence on major routes. These initiatives aim to address the anticipated surge in traffic and promote responsible driving.
Deployment of Breathalyzers
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II announced that all enforcers are equipped with breath analyzers to conduct random inspections, particularly near entertainment establishments. Motorists found with alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit may face fines or imprisonment. Violators of the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 will be turned over to the police. Mendoza advised the public to designate a driver when attending parties and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
Increased Road Presence
In anticipation of increased traffic during the holiday season, the LTO has directed local units to enhance their visibility on the roads. This includes deploying personnel on major truck routes in Metro Manila and other areas nationwide. The focus is on ensuring the roadworthiness of trucks, especially during times when truck bans are lifted. Mendoza emphasized the importance of random checks to remind drivers to exercise caution and maintain their vehicles properly.
Response to Recent Accidents
The LTO’s heightened measures come after two fatal road accidents in Quezon City and ParaƱaque City, resulting in five fatalities. In response, the agency issued show-cause orders against the owners and drivers of the involved trucks, suspended the drivers’ licenses for 90 days, and placed the vehicles under alarm. Mendoza urged truck owners and operators to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles.
Public Advisory
The LTO advises motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid driving under the influence, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition. The agency remains committed to implementing measures that promote road safety and protect the public during the holiday season.
