The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has intensified its road safety measures as the holiday season draws to a close, deploying additional personnel to manage traffic and enforce road safety rules.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II issued a strong appeal to motorists, urging vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations as millions are expected to return to urban areas this weekend.
Increased Road Safety Efforts
Assistant Secretary Mendoza instructed all LTO Regional Directors and office heads to ensure a robust presence of enforcers on major thoroughfares. This initiative, coordinated with other government agencies, aims to address the surge in vehicular traffic as Filipinos return to work and school after the extended holiday break.
“Our personnel, in coordination with other government agencies, will be on the ground to assist our kababayan on their way back to Metro Manila and other urban areas,” said Mendoza. “We expect a huge volume of motor vehicles on the road, so we have to make our presence felt to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Road Safety Concerns Amid Rising Accidents
The urgency of the LTO’s campaign is underscored by recent statistics from the Department of Health, which reported over 500 road accidents during the Christmas holiday. Tragically, these incidents claimed the lives of at least six individuals.
To mitigate risks, the LTO has ramped up operations targeting violations such as overloading and the use of worn-out tires, particularly among trucks. Last month, the agency issued show-cause orders to more than 25 truck operators, emphasizing that road safety regulations apply to all vehicles. These operations are often conducted during peak truck movement hours, from late evening to early morning.
“Our aggressive campaign to make all our roads safe is part of the road safety advocacy of DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista and aligns with our ‘Stop Road Crash’ initiative,” Mendoza noted.
Call for Public Cooperation
While the LTO has doubled its efforts, Mendoza emphasized the critical role of motorists in ensuring road safety. He urged drivers to perform vehicle checks, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and get adequate rest before long journeys. “We call on all motorists to help us by taking necessary road safety measures and following regulations, not just for their safety but for all road users,” he said.
Assistance on Major Thoroughfares
To further support the public, Mendoza assured that an adequate number of LTO personnel would be stationed on major roads to assist commuters and monitor traffic flow. This visible presence aims to ease congestion and provide immediate assistance where necessary.
The deployment is particularly crucial in Metro Manila, where traffic is expected to peak. The LTO’s coordination with other agencies seeks to create a seamless travel experience for returning workers and students.
Road Safety Advocacy and Education
Beyond enforcement, the LTO has made strides in promoting road safety awareness through education campaigns. Mendoza reiterated the importance of these initiatives in preventing accidents and fostering a culture of responsible driving.
He also highlighted the government’s commitment to long-term road safety improvements, aligning with broader transport safety goals. The “Stop Road Crash” advocacy is a cornerstone of this effort, focusing on reducing preventable accidents through stringent enforcement and public cooperation.
Safety First as the Holiday Rush Ends
As the holiday break concludes, the LTO’s proactive measures serve as a reminder of the shared responsibility for road safety. With increased personnel on duty and stricter enforcement of traffic rules, the agency is prepared to handle the anticipated influx of vehicles.
However, the success of these efforts largely depends on the cooperation of motorists. By following safety protocols and being mindful of others on the road, drivers can contribute to a safer and smoother journey for everyone.
In the words of Assistant Secretary Mendoza, “Let us all work together to make our roads safe. Every road user has a role to play in ensuring a safe and accident-free journey.”
As the weekend approaches, travelers are reminded to plan their trips carefully and remain alert to ensure they reach their destinations safely.

The holiday season traditionally sees heavy traffic as people travel back to work and school.
To address this, the LTO has dispatched more staff to guide motorists and uphold road safety rules.
Executive Director Pua highlighted the importance of proper coordination and preparation for this transition.
LTO officers will be visible on major thoroughfares starting January 3, 2024.
Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations for everyone’s benefit.
The LTO remains committed to creating safer roads and a more efficient travel experience for all.
