The Land Transportation Office (LTO) took a major step toward modernizing public transportation with the introduction of a fully electric vehicle from Global Electric Transport (GET) Philippines. The demonstration was held at the LTO main office, with Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II leading the event.
A Vision for Modern, Eco-Friendly Transport
Atty. Mendoza personally observed the electric vehicle’s features as presented by GET Philippines’ Chief Legal Services Atty. SP Sumulong and General Manager Dang Tirante. The showcase emphasized how electric jeepneys can become a cleaner, safer, and more efficient alternative to traditional public utility vehicles (PUVs).
“We are looking at a future where our commuters enjoy safer, more affordable, and environmentally-friendly transportation,” Mendoza said. He added that these innovations align with the LTO’s commitment to modernizing the country’s road transport sector.
Innovative Features Highlighted
The GET Philippines team demonstrated the vehicle’s key features, including:
- Zero-emission electric motors, reducing air pollution.
- Smart technology for route tracking and passenger management.
- Cost-efficient operations, offering lower maintenance and fuel expenses compared to diesel-powered jeepneys.
The electric vehicle also boasts improved safety standards, ergonomic designs for passenger comfort, and accessible entry points for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Involved Agencies and Collaborative Efforts
The demonstration was part of LTO’s broader Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), which is supported by the Department of Transportation (DOTr). This collaboration aims to replace old, smoke-belching PUVs with modern units that comply with environmental and safety standards.
The LTO is working with stakeholders, including transport groups, vehicle manufacturers, and financing institutions, to facilitate a smooth transition to electric vehicles. Financing options and government incentives are expected to help operators acquire these modern units.
Long-Term Impact on Commuters and the Environment
LTO officials stressed that adopting electric vehicles could bring long-term benefits such as:
- Cleaner air quality in urban areas.
- Reduced noise pollution, improving the commuting experience.
- Lower transport costs for operators, potentially translating to stable fares.
By 2025, the LTO expects a significant number of electric PUVs to be on Philippine roads. This shift is seen as a key move in addressing climate change challenges and improving public health.
Next Steps Toward a Sustainable Future
The LTO plans to continue working closely with GET Philippines and other partners to expand the deployment of electric vehicles. Atty. Mendoza emphasized that the agency is focused on building sustainable and modern transport infrastructure that benefits both operators and commuters.
“Together, we can transform public transportation into a system that works for the people and the planet,” Mendoza concluded.
